This is the original, a single sheet of cold-press Fabriano, and there will never be another one exactly like it.
Six koi drift in from every edge, gathering through smoky teal water. Their soft white and silver bodies carry touches of red and rust, and small flecks of orange float around them like fallen leaves. The paper is part of the mood: up close, the soft grain of the cold-press surface shows through the haze, and you can follow the layered washes and blurred edges stroke by stroke.
It always reminds me of looking down into a pond on a foggy Hill Country morning here in Wimberley, Texas. It's a quiet piece, and the original rewards slow looking, with more color hiding in the mist than you'd expect.
