There is only one of this painting, and this is it: the original watercolor on cold-press Fabriano, with every brushstroke and soft, grainy wash still sitting right on the paper.
Three koi come together at the center of a deep blue pond, nearly nose to nose. Their pearl-white bodies are splashed with warm red and orange, one dotted with tiny gold and dark freckles, and their fins are so thin they look like glass. High in one corner, yellow and red light glows through the blue. In person, the texture of the cold-press paper catches the light in the darker passages and makes the color feel even richer.
I've been making art my whole life, and bright, warm pieces like this one are the ones I love most to send to a new home. It's signed in the lower left.
