This is the original painting, the one and only, on cold-press Fabriano. On the real sheet, the gentle tooth of the paper gives the pastels a soft, velvety texture, and you can see the delicate layers of wash and every spot where one color melted into the next.
A crowd of koi circles slowly together: white ones with coral-red scales, red-and-white ones, and a few pale fish drifting at the edges. The water dissolves into soft blue, green, gold and lilac, until the koi look like they are swimming through color instead of water.
I've made art for as long as I can remember, and the moment when the paint blurs into something dreamy still delights me. This one feels like a daydream I got to keep.
