This is the original Jewel Pond, the actual painting, and there is only one. I painted it on a full elephant sheet of cold-press Fabriano Artistico, 26 x 40 inches. Standing in front of it, you can see the pigment sink into the paper and the color build up, layer by layer and scale by scale.
Seven koi crowd a green and blue pond, glowing red, orange, gold and white, every scale picked out in bright, jewel-like color. They loop and cross over each other, so your eye keeps moving around the page.
I went bold here, with strong outlines and saturated reds. Coming back to painting, I wanted to make work that makes me happy every time I see it, and this pond does exactly that.
