This is the original painting, the actual sheet my brush touched, and there is only one. On cold-press Fabriano, the tooth of the paper gives the water a soft grain you can see up close, and the pigment settles into it in a way no print can match.
A lone koi turns through dark turquoise in a long, unhurried curve, seen from above. Its back burns in rust and copper, a red patch crowns its head, and its pale fins pick up the light. Around it, streaks of gold, rust and green sink down through the blue like sunlight into a pond. Look closely and you'll find layered washes and brushstrokes left just as they dried.
I spent six years photographing the world before coming back to watercolor, and this piece is a big part of why I'm so glad I did.
