This is the one-of-a-kind original, painted on smooth-press Fabriano Artistico. The smooth surface let my washes run and bloom freely, and every drip and soft edge is still there exactly where it dried.
Two koi travel together along the right side of the sheet: a white koi marked with bold crimson, and a warm gold-orange koi gliding just below. I left most of the paper open, filled with long washes of teal, blue and ochre that fall down the page like reflections on water. To me, they're two old friends, comfortable in each other's company.
At 52, I've learned the value of leaving some space, and this painting holds a lot of it. In person, those open washes have a glow and depth that's hard to capture in a photo or a print.
