This is the only Pale Spirits there is: the original watercolor on hot-press Fabriano. Hot-press paper is very smooth, so the paint sits on the surface and travels wherever the water takes it. You can see every drip, bloom and spatter just as it landed.
Three ghostly cream koi rise through veils of green, teal, ochre and blue, while a streak of red trails from one tail on the left. Flecks of white scatter across the water like sparkles of light. It's the loosest of all my koi paintings.
For a long time I was discouraged from making art. Letting go like this, and letting the color find its own way, is how I've learned to trust my hand again. Up close, the layers and drips in the original have a depth a print can only hint at.
