One koi, glowing like a coal in deep turquoise water. I painted it from above, curving across the page in a slow arc, rust and copper along its back, a bright red crown on its head and pale fins catching the light.
All around, the water is streaked with gold, rust and green, like light falling down through a pond. After six years behind a camera, painting a quiet moment like this one reminded me why I picked up a brush in the first place.
